Planning Your Trip to Buffalo Butte Ranch
Ready to Experience a Hunt of a Lifetime? Planning a pheasant hunt or shooting trip to Buffalo Butte Ranch should not be hard. To ensure you have a wonderful experience, we have compiled a list of information to help you prepare for your hunt and stay.
Weather

Flying
Buffalo Butte Ranch is located in the "Golden Triangle" a prime pheasant hunting area between Gregory, Winner and Chamberlain. If choosing you are choosing to visit us by air, below are a list of airports to fly into. The nearest commercial airport is located in Pierre, South Dakota.
Commercial
- Pierre, SD Regional Airport - 90 miles (1.5 hour drive)
- Sioux Falls, SD Regional Airport - 180 miles (3 hour drive)
Private
Winner, Gregory and Chamberlain all provide air service for smaller aircraft and all three are about 35 minutes from the lodge. We will meet you at the airport and drive you to the lodge.
- Winner, SD (Winner Regional Airport) - The Winner city airport located 26 miles from the lodge has two runways with lengths of 2,900 and 4,500 feet. The main runway surface is concrete pavement. Total load bearing capacity is 40,000 pounds contiguous and 60,000 pounds intermittently. The airport has one-hundred octane aircraft fuel and jet fuel available along with maintenance services provided by Western Aviation. Many corporate jets fly in and out of the Winner airport during the hunting season.
- Chamberlain, SD (Chamberlain Municipal Airport) - I-90 Exit 265, South of Chamberlain Runway surface: 75′ wide, 4300′ long 13/31 Asphalt 13/31 GPS Approach: 18/36 turf (3400 x 150).
- Gregory, SD (Gregory Municipal Airport) - The asphalt runway is 3800 x 60 ft. and lighted. It is equipped with the Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) light system to assist landing.

Hunting License
Pheasant licenses are available at Cabela's in Mitchell, South Dakota or it's just as easy to purchase online at the lodge. Pheasant Hunt Gear
There are many items that you should have for your pheasant hunt, below are a few key items that we have found to be useful in planning your hunt.
- Waterproof hunting jacket
- Waterproof hunting boots
- Waterproof pants and canvas front pants
- Waterproof gloves/shooting gloves
- Protective Eyewear
- Blaze orange shooting shirt, vest, or cap
- Gun: 12 gauge recommended
- Camera, batteries and film
- License: You may buy it at the lodge, Cabela's or buy it before you reach your destination
Prairie Dog Hunting Gear
Prairie dog hunting is an exciting and challenging event. The last thing you need is to be unprepared. Below are a few items that we have found useful to get you ready for your hunt.
- Binoculars
- Sunblock
- Range finder
- Spotting scopes
- Camera, batteries and film
- Ammo: Any caliber is accepted
- Rounds: Plan to shoot 200-300 per day
- Rifle: Any rifle is accepted
- Benches: We have shooting benches or bring your own
- License: You may buy it at the lodge, Cabela's or buy it before you reach your destination
Fishing Gear
Fishing on the Missouri River and Francis Case is a great way to get out and enjoy Buffalo Butte when not hunting pheasants. Below are a few of many items to help you make your guided fishing trip at Buffalo Butte more enjoyable and memorable.

Bringing Your Dog
A dog is a hunter's best friend. That is why here at Buffalo Butte Ranch we welcome you bringing a dog to the lodge provided shots are current. While the dogs are not allowed inside the lodge, we do however have accommodations for them. This will ensure your dog's stay is as comfortable as yours, while your here enjoying your South Dakota Pheasant Hunting trip.
