Happy Spring

Hello and “Happy Spring” from Buffalo Butte Ranch!!
Once again winter was fairly mild in this part of South Dakota. We had a few snow events of 5” + - but nothing news worthy. Of course we had cold temps and wind but if you have spent much time in SD you should expect that. All the pheasants and prairie dogs came through in great shape. Hen pheasants are on their nests now and we could start seeing chicks in a few weeks. As you all know this is the crucial time for the pheasants. Too much rain is just as bad as too little. This past week we received 2.5 inches of rain which was greatly needed. A few more weeks of moderate temps and moisture and we will be set for another great fall hunting season.
As for the prairie dogs, well they did just fine in their holes over the winter. In fact we have seen pups out already which is a few weeks earlier than average and the dog towns seem to be expanding. Our prairie dog hunting season is just around the corner and we have a bunch of shooters who will do their best to curb that expansion.
Spring has been busy getting machinery ready for planting along with making more live traps for predators. At the time of this writing about 20 traps out have yielded several dozen varmints, mainly skunks and coons. All being released to a happier place.
Always look forward to seeing familiar faces when hunting season gets here be it spring for prairie dog season or fall for pheasant season. For those of you who are returning to Buffalo Butte Ranch you may see some new faces and will see most of the old faces. We look forward to seeing yours!!
